Zambia Secures $120 Million World Bank Grant to Revolutionize Digital Infrastructure

Zambia is embarking on a significant leap forward in its digital transformation journey, having successfully secured a substantial $120 million grant from the World Bank. This pivotal funding is strategically allocated to the expansion of the nation’s digital infrastructure, signaling a robust commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering technological advancement across the country. This investment is recognized as a critical enabler for Zambia to achieve its ambitious national development objectives, particularly those outlined in its Science, Technology, and Innovation Policy and the long-term Vision 2030 blueprint.

Driving Digital Connectivity and Financial Inclusion

The landmark World Bank grant of $120 million represents a major catalyst for Zambia’s digital future. Felix Mutati, Zambia’s Minister of Technology and Science, formally announced this crucial funding during the recent Lusaka launch of the ABSA Mobi Tap app, an innovative new mobile payment solution designed to boost financial inclusion. Speaking through the Ministry’s Human Resource Director, George Matulula, Minister Mutati unveiled an ambitious target: to extend 4G and 5G network coverage to a remarkable 90% of the Zambian population by the close of the current year. This aggressive rollout underscores the government’s dedication to ensuring widespread access to high-speed internet, a fundamental component of modern economic growth and social development. The Minister also highlighted the transformative potential of the ABSA Mobi Tap app, describing it as a “powerful tool” that will significantly contribute to promoting financial inclusion by making digital payments more accessible and convenient for citizens and businesses alike across the African nation.

This strategic investment from the World Bank is poised to accelerate Zambia’s digital agenda, creating a more connected and technologically empowered society. By enhancing its digital infrastructure and expanding network coverage, Zambia is setting a firm foundation for innovation, economic diversification, and improved access to essential digital services for its populace. The dual focus on core infrastructure and practical digital solutions like the ABSA Mobi Tap app demonstrates a holistic approach to building a robust and inclusive digital economy.
