Meta & Data Science Africa Announce Llama Impact Grant Winners in Sub-Saharan Africa
Meta, collaborating with Data Science Africa, has revealed the recipients of the Llama Impact Grant for Startups and Researchers, specifically targeting innovative solutions within Sub-Saharan Africa. The announcement took place at the UN General Assembly’s Unstoppable Africa 2025 event, highlighting the importance of leveraging technology for development across the continent.
Driving Innovation with Llama: Focus on Africa
Launched in October 2023, the Llama Impact Grant is a global initiative designed to identify and scale impactful applications of Llama, Meta’s open-source large language model, to address pressing issues in key sectors. The program focuses on finding solutions for education, healthcare, agriculture, and digital inclusion. To date, the initiative has received over 800 applications from more than 90 countries, demonstrating significant global interest. Previous finalists include impactful ventures like Digital Green’s Farmer Chat, providing AI-powered assistance to smallholder farmers, and Jacaranda Health’s PROMPTS, which delivers AI-driven support for maternal health. Both initiatives operate within Sub-Saharan Africa, showcasing the region’s potential for AI-driven solutions. This grant reflects Meta’s dedication to strengthening the African AI and innovation landscape, prioritizing projects with the potential to scale within healthcare, education, agriculture, and improving digital accessibility.
The Llama Impact Grant winners will each receive $20,000 in funding to further develop their projects. Beyond the financial support, the program provides crucial technical mentorship, valuable networking opportunities, and active engagement with experts in the field. This comprehensive support system aims to accelerate the development and deployment of these impactful AI solutions across Sub-Saharan Africa.
