Internet Pioneer: More Users, Lower Prices for Data in Ghana
Ghana faces a challenge: high internet costs. But according to Professor Nii Narku Quaynor, the “father of the internet” in Ghana, there’s a solution. Wider internet adoption could dramatically reduce data prices for consumers.
Economies of Scale: The Key to Affordable Data
Professor Quaynor argues that increased internet penetration allows service providers to leverage economies of scale. As users consume more bandwidth, the cost per unit decreases for providers. He stated that cost is related to the bandwidth and that if the user bandwidth consumption increases, the price for data will decrease. This, in turn, enables them to offer more affordable data plans. The call comes amid concerns that Ghana’s internet costs remain among the highest in the subregion.
Ultimately, achieving affordable internet access in Ghana hinges on expanding the user base. With a larger customer base, further investment in infrastructure, such as additional undersea cables, becomes a more economically viable option, driving down costs even further.
