5G in Algeria: Ookla Maps Show Coverage Before Official Launch
Algeria is gearing up for the commercial launch of 5G technology, expected in the third quarter of 2025, according to Ookla’s “5G in North Africa 2025” report. Interestingly, Ookla’s data already reveals a technical presence of 5G in Algiers. Signal strength maps (RSRP) indicate active zones starting as early as the fourth quarter of 2024, with an increase in activity observed in the second quarter of 2025. This suggests preliminary deployments and testing are already underway ahead of the official rollout.
Provisional 5G Licenses Awarded
On July 3, 2025, Algerian authorities provisionally awarded 5G licenses to the three major mobile operators: Mobilis, Djezzy, and Ooredoo. Each operator received 100 MHz of spectrum in the 3.5 GHz band. During the award ceremony, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, emphasized the transformative potential of 5G. He stated that 5G is not just a technology but “an infrastructure, an economic dynamic, and a national vision that accelerates innovation and empowers our youth.” He also highlighted 5G’s role in modernizing key sectors like education and healthcare.
The pre-launch 5G activity detected by Ookla, combined with the provisional license awards, signals Algeria’s commitment to embracing next-generation connectivity. The government clearly views 5G as a critical component for future economic growth and technological advancement within the country and the broader African tech landscape.
