MIIF Empowers Future STEM Leaders: Scholarships Awarded to 45 Female UMaT Students
The Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) is making significant strides in supporting female participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields within Ghana’s mining sector. In a recent initiative, MIIF awarded full scholarships to 45 exceptional but financially disadvantaged female students at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa. This endeavor falls under MIIF’s flagship Women from Mining Communities (WomCoM) scholarship scheme, showcasing a commitment to corporate social responsibility and the empowerment of young women.
Investing in STEM Futures: Details of the WomCoM Scholarship
Launched in June 2024, the WomCoM program specifically targets academically gifted young women from mining communities in Ghana. The goal is to facilitate their pursuit of higher education in STEM and mining-related disciplines, thus fostering future leaders in the industry. This year’s scholarship allocation, valued at GH¢460,000, supports 43 undergraduate and 2 postgraduate students. Each undergraduate recipient received GH¢10,000, while postgraduate students were awarded GH¢15,000. These funds are designed to cover essential academic expenses, including tuition fees and accommodation costs. The selection process was highly competitive, with over 100 applications received, highlighting the immense need and demand for such initiatives.
This investment from MIIF not only alleviates financial burdens for the students but also contributes to a more diverse and inclusive STEM workforce in Ghana, specifically in the critical area of mining and its related industries. By fostering female participation in these fields, MIIF is playing a pivotal role in the future of Ghana’s mining sector and, by extension, its economic development.
