Mobile Payments Surge in Tunisia While Card Transactions Slow Down in First Half of 2025
The Tunisian Central Bank (BCT) recently released its Payment Bulletin No. 13, providing an overview of electronic and card-based transactions in the first six months of 2025. The report highlights a significant increase in the adoption of mobile payments, while growth in traditional card payments has slowed slightly. This trend reflects changing consumer preferences and the growing accessibility of mobile financial services in Tunisia.
Mobile Payment Dominance
Mobile payments are rapidly becoming the preferred method of transaction in Tunisia. Between January and June 2025, the total value of mobile payments soared by 41.7%, reaching 2,868.2 million dinars, compared to 2,024.8 million dinars during the same period last year. The number of mobile payment transactions also saw substantial growth, exceeding 164.2 million, an increase of 18.2%. This surge is driven by the convenience and versatility of mobile payments for everyday transactions, including retail purchases, peer-to-peer transfers, cash-in, and cash-out services. Specifically, 59.4% of mobile payments were for retail transactions, 33% for peer-to-peer transfers, 4.5% for cash-in, and 3.1% for cash-out. The increasing use of mobile payment solutions in Tunisia reflects a wider trend across Africa where digital financial services are empowering individuals and businesses alike.
