Morocco Gears Up for 5G Launch by End of 2025, Fueled by Football
Morocco is on track to commercially launch its 5G network before the end of 2025, spurred by the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (CAN). The competition, hosted by Morocco, is acting as a catalyst for accelerated deployment. According to a report by Ookla analyzing connectivity in Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco, the country is poised to embrace next-generation mobile technology.
National Rollout and Operator Commitments
In July, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) granted 5G licenses to the three main operators: Maroc Telecom (awarded 120 MHz), and Orange and inwi (each receiving 70 MHz). These operators have committed to ambitious coverage targets, aiming to reach 45% of the population by 2026 and 85% by 2030, exceeding the initial target of 70%. The initial rollout will prioritize the cities hosting CAN matches – Rabat, Casablanca, Tangier, Fès, Marrakech, and Agadir – before expanding to 20 cities and major road networks by 2026, and then to an additional 40 cities by 2028.
To support this nationwide 5G initiative, two joint ventures were established in March 2025, including TowerCo (joint venture) for infrastructure sharing for mobile sites. This will focus on installing 300 truncated
