KIA Runway Overhaul: Updates on Ghana’s Key African Aviation Hub

Kotoka International Airport Undergoes Critical Runway Upgrade for Enhanced Safety and Efficiency

Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is currently undertaking an extensive overhaul of its vital 30-year-old runway. These critical repair, maintenance, and overlay works are essential to upholding the highest standards of safety, reliability, and operational efficiency for both passengers and airlines utilizing Ghana’s premier international gateway. This significant infrastructure project, spearheaded by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), signifies a proactive commitment to modernizing the airport’s core facilities.

Project Scope, Operational Adjustments, and Key Details

According to reports from GhanaWeb on Friday, 12 September 2025, GACL commenced its contractual obligations for this ambitious runway project in March 2025. To keep the global aviation community informed, a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was promptly issued worldwide, advising airlines of the ongoing developments. The comprehensive scope of work encompasses several key elements: a crucial runway overlay to restore the surface, the installation of a state-of-the-art LED Approach Guidance Lighting (AGL) system to improve visibility and navigation, and the vital rehabilitation of the runway drainage system to prevent water accumulation. This extensive project is slated for completion in March 2027. To minimize disruption to flight schedules, the runway observes daily closures for six hours, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., over an 18-month period. Despite these scheduled nightly closures, airport authorities have reportedly received multiple requests concerning operations. In related business news, GACL also recently terminated a controversial contract with Evatex, following an ongoing investigation by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The ongoing runway upgrade at Kotoka International Airport is a testament to Ghana’s dedication to maintaining a world-class aviation infrastructure. Upon its conclusion in March 2027, the revitalized runway, complete with advanced lighting and drainage systems, will ensure KIA continues to serve as a safe, reliable, and efficient hub for air travel, bolstering its position within regional and international aviation networks and providing an enhanced experience for all stakeholders for decades to come.
