GH¢29.89m Local Fund Powers Ghana’s Clean Energy Drive

Ghana Forges Ahead in Clean Energy as Local Content Fund Sees Significant Growth

Ghana is making substantial strides in its commitment to a green transition, bolstered by the impressive expansion of the Petroleum Commission’s Local Content Fund. Richard Gyan-Mensah, the Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, recently highlighted that the fund has grown by 11.22% in cedi terms, reaching GH¢29.89 million, and an even more significant 27.08% in dollar terms, amounting to $2.49 million. This growth underscores Ghana’s dedication to empowering local businesses and fostering a sustainable energy future, positioning the nation as a key player in African clean energy initiatives.

Driving Sustainable Development Through Energy Sector Reforms

The Local Content Fund serves a crucial role in Ghana’s evolving energy agenda by supporting training and capacity building for Ghanaian enterprises operating within the oil and gas industry. This strategic investment is just one facet of broader energy sector reforms aimed at driving inclusive growth across the nation, as emphasized by Deputy Minister Gyan-Mensah. Speaking at the media launch of the 9th Ghana Energy Awards, he commended the Energy Media Group for their consistent recognition of innovation and leadership within the sector. Ghana’s green transition is further evidenced by ambitious renewable energy projects currently underway. Over 200MW of solar energy initiatives are in development, including a pioneering 25MW floating solar plant at the Bui Dam and another 30MW plant slated for the Kpong Reservoir, often in partnership with international and local stakeholders. These key milestones demonstrate a clear shift towards harnessing sustainable power sources and reducing reliance on traditional energy.

Ghana’s strategic focus on empowering local content alongside its aggressive pursuit of renewable energy projects signals a robust commitment to sustainable economic development. The expansion of the Local Content Fund and the progress in solar power generation are pivotal steps towards achieving energy security, fostering local expertise, and ensuring that the benefits of the energy sector reforms contribute to inclusive growth for all Ghanaians.
