Algeria Welcomes Fiat’s First CKD Vehicle Production in Oran

The Fiat factory in Tafraoui, within the Oran province of Algeria, has achieved a significant milestone: the commencement of production of its first vehicle using the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) system. This initiative, by the Italian brand, a part of the Stellantis automotive group, marks a pivotal moment for Algerian manufacturing. This advancement reflects a commitment to developing the nation’s industrial capabilities within the growing African automotive sector.

CKD Production: A Leap Forward

The CKD system, short for Completely Knocked Down, involves importing vehicles as disassembled parts for final assembly at the local facility. This approach represents a more advanced stage compared to SKD (Semi Knocked Down), where vehicles arrive partially assembled. Samir Cherfan, Stellantis’ Chief Operating Officer for the MENA region, highlighted this accomplishment in a LinkedIn post on Thursday, September 11th. He praised the production of the first CKD vehicle in Algeria as a “historical achievement,” attributing it to the “excellence of our personnel.” He also mentioned the completion of welding and painting installations. This suggests a push for increased local content and improved manufacturing skills within the Algerian automotive industry.

This initiative demonstrates a stride towards boosting local manufacturing capacities, contributing to job creation, and nurturing technological expertise within Algeria. This is a crucial step in supporting and establishing a strong automobile industry for the future.
