5G in Tunisia: Ookla Confirms a Remarkable Leap in Mobile Performance
2025 is set to be a pivotal year for telecommunications in Tunisia. According to Ookla, the commercial launch of 5G in February has swiftly elevated the nation to the forefront of regional rankings, with unprecedented network performance highlighting the significant advancements offered by this new mobile generation. This development is particularly noteworthy within the context of rapidly evolving technological landscapes across Africa.
Speeds Exceeding 300 Mbps at Launch
Tunisia’s three major operators – Tunisie Telecom, Ooredoo, and Orange – simultaneously launched their 5G services on February 14, 2025. Each operator secured 5 MHz in the 700 MHz band (FDD) and 100 MHz in the 3.5 GHz band (TDD), alongside future options in the 2.6 GHz and 26 GHz bands. The immediate impact was striking: the median mobile download speed exceeded 300 Mbps at launch, representing a tenfold increase compared to 4G speeds. Simultaneously, latency dropped below 12 ms, drastically improving the user experience for applications requiring quick response times.
