Nigerian Startup Renda Africa Aims to Convert One Million African Vehicles to CNG

Renda Africa, a Nigerian logistics startup, is making a bold move in the African transport sector. Recognizing the challenges of electric vehicle (EV) adoption in the near term, the company is focusing on compressed natural gas (CNG) as a more accessible and cost-effective alternative for cleaner transportation. Through its financial platform, SCALE by Renda, the company intends to convert over one million vehicles in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya to run on CNG by 2027, contributing to a more sustainable future for the continent.

Driving Change: Renda Africa’s CNG Conversion Strategy

Renda Africa’s approach focuses on removing financial barriers and offering real-time service tracking to facilitate the switch to alternative fuels for drivers and fleet owners. According to co-founder and CEO Ope Onaboye, the company achieves this without being a converter itself. With the ambitious goal of converting one million vehicles, Renda estimates it could eliminate 3.32 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This impact is equivalent to planting 115 million trees, representing a significant environmental benefit. Currently operating in over 25 Nigerian cities and Kenya, the startup is planning further expansion into Uganda, Rwanda, and Tanzania. CNG has been an integral part of Nigeria’s energy plans for years, indicating an existing framework for this initiative.

Renda Africa’s initiative demonstrates the potential of CNG to reduce emissions and foster a greener transport industry across Africa. The company’s focus on affordability and operational ease could significantly accelerate the adoption of alternative fuel solutions, contributing to cleaner air and promoting sustainable development.
