Rwanda Takes Flight: Africa’s First Self-Flying Taxi Arrives

Rwanda has made history by launching Africa’s first self-flying taxi, marking a significant leap forward for the continent’s transportation sector. This pioneering initiative represents the inaugural deployment of an autonomous passenger drone in Africa, signifying Rwanda’s commitment to embracing innovative technologies and leading the charge in future mobility solutions. The unveiling took place in Kigali during the Africa Aviation Summit 2025, drawing significant attention from industry leaders and government officials.

The EHang EH216-S: A Glimpse into the Future of African Transport

The groundbreaking self-flying taxi, known as the EHang EH216-S, is an all-electric drone capable of autonomous flight. This two-seater vehicle is designed to independently execute take-off, flight, and landing procedures. During its debut at the summit, the EH216-S demonstrated its capabilities by ascending approximately 100 meters while navigating the airspace autonomously. The demonstration was witnessed by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and other key government figures, further highlighting the significance of this achievement. The project is a collaborative effort, with the Rwandan government working alongside the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and the Chinese company EHang.

This momentous occasion positions Rwanda at the forefront of technological advancement and innovative transport solutions within Africa. The introduction of the self-flying taxi showcases the nation’s vision for the future of mobility, promising to redefine urban transportation and offer a glimpse into a more connected and efficient Africa.
