Cybercrime Costs Ghana GH¢15 Million in First Half of 2025
Ghana’s digital landscape faces a growing threat from cybercrime, with financial losses escalating in the first half of 2025. The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) reports that the Ghanaian economy lost an estimated GH¢14.9 million to cyberfraud during this period, reflecting a concerning increase in digital crime activities targeting individuals and businesses. Surging Cybercrime Trends and Government Response
The CSA’s findings reveal a stark rise in cyber incidents. Reported cases jumped from 1,317 in the first half of 2024 to 2,008 in the same period of 2025. The most prevalent form of cybercrime was online fraud, accounting for 36 percent of reported incidents. Cyberbullying (25 percent), online blackmail (14 percent), unauthorized access (12 percent), and information disclosure (9 percent) also featured prominently. These incidents represent a 17 percent year-on-year increase in financial losses, highlighting the growing sophistication and prevalence of digital threats. The Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has responded to this crisis. He warned cybercriminals of an intensified crackdown. The government is collaborating with security agencies and regulators to combat cybercrime effectively. Financial losses in 2024 already amounted to GH¢23.3 million, with impersonation and fraud accounting for over 94 percent of all reported cases.
