AI in Nigerian Agriculture: A Lifeline for Food Security?

Nigeria’s agricultural sector is facing significant challenges. Climate change, inflation, and ongoing conflicts have created a perfect storm, raising serious concerns about food security. The World Food Programme estimates that a staggering 33 million Nigerians could experience food insecurity by 2025. In response, agritech startups are aggressively developing and deploying Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered solutions, hoping to increase food production using fewer resources. These innovations are being positioned as critical tools in averting a potential crisis.

AI-Driven Solutions: Promises and Realities

Agritech companies are emphasizing the potential of AI to optimize farming practices in Nigeria. These platforms aim to enhance productivity by making the most of limited inputs. For instance, Kitovu, a prominent Nigerian agritech firm, offers data-driven advisory tools. These tools utilize remote sensing and agronomic models to deliver specific recommendations for soil management and crop selection. However, the reality on the ground is complex. Smallholder farmers, who contribute approximately 80% of Nigeria’s food supply according to the FAO, are at the forefront of this food security crisis. The adoption of AI-driven technologies requires careful consideration of their accessibility, affordability, and suitability for the needs of these farmers.

The development of AI in agriculture offers significant opportunities for improving the food supply in Nigeria. But to have a sustainable impact on the impending food security crisis, the AI tools must be accessible and practical for the farmers who need them the most.
