JAMB Uncovers AI Cheating and Finger Blending in 2025 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed a disturbing trend of technology-driven examination malpractice in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The board discovered 192 instances of candidates utilizing artificial intelligence for cheating, alongside a staggering 4,251 cases of finger blending, a technique used to circumvent biometric verification. This revelation underscores the evolving sophistication of fraudulent activities aimed at undermining the integrity of Nigeria’s higher education admission process.

Technology-Driven Examination Infractions

JAMB’s Special Committee on Examination Infractions (SCEI), led by Chairman Dr. Jake Epele, has characterized the current state of examination malpractice as dangerously orchestrated and heavily reliant on technology. The committee expressed concern that these activities could severely damage the credibility of Nigeria’s education system. Investigations also revealed that some Computer-Based Test (CBT) center operators are complicit in these fraudulent schemes. Further findings included 1,878 cases of candidates falsely claiming disabilities to gain an unfair advantage. The committee highlighted AI-assisted impersonation through image morphing and the manipulation of biometric data through finger blending as particularly concerning developments.

These findings highlight the urgent need for JAMB to continuously upgrade its security measures and proactively address emerging threats to the UTME’s integrity. The use of advanced technology by candidates and the alleged involvement of CBT center operators pose significant challenges that must be addressed to ensure a fair and transparent admission process for all aspiring Nigerian students.
