Sam George should stop threatening and tormenting MultiChoice Ghana – ILAPI boss

Peter Bismark Kwofie, the Executive Director of the Institute of Liberty and Policy Innovation (ILAPI), has weighed in on the escalating public dispute between MultiChoice Ghana and the Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George. Kwofie has called on the minister to cease what he describes as unfair pressure on the DStv operator regarding its subscription fees. This intervention follows a contentious episode where the minister’s announcement of a price-cut agreement was publicly denied by the company, raising questions about the government’s engagement with private enterprises in Ghana’s digital sector.

Disagreement Erupts Over Price Reduction Claims

The controversy ignited after Minister Sam George held a press conference declaring that his ministry had secured an agreement with MultiChoice to lower its DStv package prices. He further announced that a committee had been established to work alongside the company to finalize the modalities for implementing these reductions. However, this claim was swiftly contradicted by MultiChoice Ghana. In a statement issued on the evening of Saturday, September 6, 2025, the company explicitly refuted the minister’s assertion, stating that no such agreement to reduce subscription costs had been reached. This direct denial publicly challenged the minister’s announcement and set the stage for further debate.

Reacting to the conflicting reports, Kwofie accused the minister of “tormenting” the satellite television provider. The ILAPI director argued that the government’s approach was unreasonable and counterproductive. In his view, a more logical first step would be for the government to take measures to reduce the overall cost of doing business in the country. Kwofie posited that before demanding price cuts from a private company like DStv, the government should focus on creating a more favourable economic environment that would naturally allow businesses to lower their prices for consumers.
