DStv Price Drop Imminent: Ghana Sets September 21 Deadline for New Rates

Ghanaian DStv subscribers can soon anticipate a reduction in their monthly subscription fees, following a crucial announcement by the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George. On Friday, September 5, 2025, Minister George revealed that a dedicated stakeholder committee is set to finalize a new pricing structure for MultiChoice Ghana’s DStv bouquets within the next two weeks, aiming for an agreement by September 21, 2025. This development signals a significant step towards addressing long-standing consumer concerns regarding satellite television costs in the country.

The Road to Price Reductions

The decision to implement price adjustments comes after a period of intense pressure on MultiChoice Ghana. The company has been incurring a daily fine of GH¢10,000 since August 14, 2025, and faced a 30-day suspension notice issued on August 7, 2025. These regulatory actions were a direct consequence of MultiChoice Ghana’s non-compliance with directives concerning its pricing model. Minister Samuel Nartey George confirmed that MultiChoice Ghana has now conceded to the necessity of a price reduction. “They have finally accepted that there will be a reduction. Now, they want us to discuss the level of reduction,” Minister George stated, indicating a shift from outright refusal to negotiation. To ensure a swift resolution, a high-level committee has been established. Chaired personally by Minister George, the committee includes key representatives from the Ministry for Communications, the National Communications Authority (NCA), MultiChoice Ghana, and MultiChoice Africa. This collaborative approach is intended to facilitate an efficient and fair determination of the new, reduced DStv pricing.

As the September 21, 2025, deadline approaches, Ghanaian DStv users are watching closely for the outcome of these negotiations. The formation of this committee and MultiChoice’s agreement to a price reduction mark a pivotal moment for consumer advocacy and regulatory oversight in Ghana’s digital technology sector. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring fair pricing and improved service delivery for its citizens, promising a more affordable entertainment experience for many households across the nation.
