MTN Ghana’s cautious stance stems from a pragmatic assessment of its market reality. Speaking at a press briefing during the Digital Africa Summit in Accra on September 3, 2025, Stephen Blewett highlighted that a significant portion of their subscribers still actively rely on 2G and 3G networks. This continued usage isn’t merely due to a lack of awareness; it’s often a deliberate choice or a technological limitation. Many users consciously opt for 3G to better manage and reduce their data consumption, even when 4G is readily available. Furthermore, a substantial segment of the population utilizes older mobile devices that simply lack the capability to connect to 4G networks. As Blewett was quoted by citinewsroom, “A lot of our customers are still operating on 3G. Even though 4G is widely available, some choose to stay on 3G because they feel data usage is faster on 4G. Others, however, use older devices that don’t support 4G.” MTN Ghana is committed to ensuring that the eventual phasing out of 3G does not disadvantage or disconnect customers who remain dependent on these legacy services.
