Temu Embraces South African Languages in Ambitious Expansion

E-commerce powerhouse Temu is making significant strides to solidify its presence in South Africa by integrating support for several local languages, starting with Zulu. Effective immediately, this update aims to cater to a broader audience within the country’s burgeoning digital retail landscape, marking a strategic evolution since its South African launch in January 2024.

# Bridging the Language Gap in E-commerce

This initiative positions Temu as the first major e-commerce platform in South Africa to provide a multilingual interface customized for the nation’s diverse linguistic landscape, encompassing all 12 official languages. Zulu, spoken by nearly a quarter of the population (24.7%), is the most prevalent home language, followed by Xhosa (16%) and Afrikaans (12.1%). While English dominates online spaces, it is the first language of only 9.6% of South Africans. Temu’s move is designed to address this disparity and make online shopping more accessible and user-friendly for a wider range of customers.

As South Africa’s e-commerce sector experiences rapid growth, fueled by a 74.7% internet penetration rate in 2024 and projected to continue expanding through 2033, Temu’s language integration strategy is a calculated move to capitalize on the increasing number of South Africans embracing online shopping. By catering to local languages, Temu is poised to capture a larger share of this expanding market and enhance its appeal to a diverse consumer base.
