Paratus Disrupts Namibia’s Telecoms with First Private Mobile Network

Paratus Group, a prominent telecom operator in Africa, has officially launched Namibia’s first privately-owned mobile network, a move that promises to shake up a market historically dominated by state-owned enterprises like MTC and Telecom Namibia. This entry marks a significant shift in Namibia’s mobile sector, potentially injecting much-needed competition into a landscape where MTC alone serves a vast majority of the country’s just over three million inhabitants.

# A Leap Towards Modern Connectivity

Paratus’s decision to deploy a 4G LTE-only network is a strategic one, allowing it to bypass older 2G and 3G infrastructures. This approach aligns with the broader regional trend of phasing out these legacy technologies in favor of faster, more efficient networks. The company has made a substantial investment of N$1.42 billion ($81 million) in its Namibian operations, signaling its commitment to providing advanced mobile services. The network is specifically tailored to appeal to a younger, tech-savvy demographic seeking enhanced speed and reliability in their mobile connectivity.

The launch comes at a pivotal time as South Africa plans to decommission its 2G and 3G networks by December 2027 to free up spectrum for 4G and 5G deployment. While this move aims to accelerate technological advancement, critics caution it could exacerbate the digital divide if not carefully managed. Paratus’s new network in Namibia offers a glimpse into the future of mobile connectivity in the region, emphasizing the importance of bridging the digital gap while embracing technological innovation.
