Why Nigeria Needs to Be in Space: A Case for Capacity

The question of why Nigeria should invest in space exploration and technology often arises. Just like President Kennedy questioned the purpose of the US-Russia space race, it’s a valid inquiry that requires thoughtful consideration, especially within the context of a developing nation. The answer lies not just in prestige, but in building crucial national capacity and infrastructure.

Securing Nigeria’s Place in Orbit

Recently, the author spent considerable time working with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a UN agency responsible for allocating orbital slots and radio frequencies. This year-long effort aimed to ensure Nigeria retains its assets in space. The ITU’s role is critical in preventing conflicts between nations and organizations vying for these limited resources. This situation highlights a fundamental reason for Nigeria’s presence in space: protecting its existing investments and securing its future access.

Beyond the immediate need to safeguard orbital slots, a commitment to space technology fosters innovation, develops specialized skills, and drives economic growth. It encourages Nigerian engineers, scientists, and technicians to push boundaries and contribute to advancements in telecommunications, remote sensing, and other vital sectors. By actively participating in the global space arena, Nigeria is not simply reaching for the stars; it is strategically investing in its future.
