MTN Eyes Telkom SA Acquisition: Talks to Resume by 2025

Telecoms giant MTN Group is reportedly considering rekindling its ambition to acquire South African rival Telkom, signaling a potential shift in the country’s telecommunications landscape. After abandoning initial acquisition talks in 2022, MTN is exploring a renewed bid to expand its reach and solidify its position as a dominant force in the African market.

# Expanding Footprint in Africa

The potential acquisition of Telkom aligns with MTN’s broader strategy to increase its market share across the continent. Currently serving 298 million subscribers across 15 African nations, incorporating Telkom’s 23 million subscribers would significantly bolster MTN’s customer base. According to sources, both companies are engaging with experts and advisors to assess the feasibility of a new takeover proposal. While negotiations are anticipated to commence by the end of 2025, there’s no assurance of a successful agreement. The previous attempt to merge faced challenges, primarily due to concerns regarding antitrust approval, raising fears that regulators would reject the deal due to competition concerns.

Despite previous setbacks, MTN’s renewed interest in Telkom highlights the ongoing consolidation within the African telecommunications industry and the strategic importance of expanding market share. Whether the two companies can overcome previous hurdles and reach a mutually agreeable deal remains to be seen.
