Lagos Blue Line Celebrates 2 Years and 5 Million Riders, Announces 50% Fare Cut

The Lagos Blue Line, a critical component of Lagos’s urban transport solution, is celebrating two successful years of operation, having transported over five million passengers since its launch in September 2023. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced the milestone, highlighting the line’s significant contribution to easing traffic congestion in the bustling megacity. In a move aimed at making transportation even more accessible, the Governor also revealed a 50% reduction in fares, effective Thursday, September 4, 2025.

Blue Line Impact and Future Prospects

According to Governor Sanwo-Olu via his X handle, the Lagos Blue Line currently operates with trains running every 10 minutes, completing more than 90 trips daily. This high-frequency service provides vital connections along some of Lagos’s most heavily trafficked routes. The Blue Line is a key part of the larger Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) project, designed to serve as the backbone of the state’s urban mobility plan. As Africa’s fastest-growing megacity continues to expand, the LRMT project is crucial for meeting the increasing transport demands of its residents.

The Lagos Blue Line’s success underscores the importance of investing in sustainable and efficient public transportation systems in rapidly growing African cities. The fare reduction will further encourage ridership, contributing to reduced road congestion and a more environmentally friendly transportation landscape. The future looks bright for the Lagos Rail Mass Transit project, with ongoing efforts to expand and improve the network, ultimately providing a more seamless and accessible transportation experience for all Lagosians.
