KrosAI: Bridging the Digital Divide in Africa Through AI for Feature Phones

KrosAI is tackling a significant challenge in Africa: providing access to essential services for individuals without smartphones. Founder Joshua Firima envisions a future where even those in remote areas with poor internet connectivity can access real-time information, healthcare, and banking services simply by calling a local phone number and interacting with an AI assistant. This innovative approach bypasses the limitations of smartphone apps and unreliable internet, bringing the power of AI to a wider segment of the population.

Democratizing Access to Information and Services

While Nigeria’s startup scene has historically focused on fintech solutions aiming to “bank the unbanked,” financial inclusion remains a challenge. Despite the rise of companies like Opay, Moniepoint, and Paystack, Nigeria’s financial inclusion rate stood at only 64% in 2023, significantly below the government’s 95% target. Firima believes that the next wave of innovation lies in making artificial intelligence accessible to Africans who are currently underserved by the English-centric products developed in Silicon Valley. He recognizes the immense potential of AI to address critical needs across various sectors, particularly for those who rely on basic mobile phones.

KrosAI’s approach highlights a crucial shift in focus: from solving payment challenges to facilitating broader access to information and services. Firima asserts that while payments were the primary obstacle for African businesses a decade ago, their current priority is expanding their reach across emerging markets. By leveraging AI and traditional phone technology, KrosAI is paving the way for a more inclusive and connected future for Africans, regardless of their access to smartphones or reliable internet.
