Ghana Government Eyes Merger of AT Ghana and Telecel: A Telecom Shake-Up

Ghana’s telecommunications landscape is poised for a significant shift as the government pushes forward with plans to merge the struggling AirtelTigo (AT Ghana) with Telecel Ghana. This strategic move aims to create a more robust and competitive entity within the nation’s bustling telecom sector, while addressing the financial woes plaguing AT Ghana.

Job Security Assured for AT Ghana Employees

A key concern surrounding the merger has been the fate of AT Ghana’s workforce. Communication Minister Samuel Nartey George has provided reassurance to the 300 permanent employees, guaranteeing their job security throughout the integration process. He emphasized that their contracts would continue uninterrupted, dispelling fears of a re-application process. Furthermore, the technical migration of AT Ghana’s subscribers to Telecel’s network is already underway, with over 3.2 million users experiencing a largely seamless transition via national roaming, currently operating at a reported 98% efficiency. The integration is planned in three phases beginning with the already near completed technical migration.

This merger represents a strategic intervention by the Ghanaian government to consolidate resources, eliminate redundancies, and ultimately forge a stronger telecom operator. With AT Ghana reportedly losing over $10 million in just eight months, the merger with Telecel offers a potential pathway to financial stability and enhanced competitiveness in the long run.
