Djibouti Telecom Extends DARE1 Subsea Cable, Revolutionizing Southern African Connectivity

Djibouti Telecom is set to significantly enhance Africa’s digital landscape with its ambitious plan to extend the Djibouti Africa Regional Express 1 (DARE1) subsea cable system. This strategic expansion further south along the continent’s east coast is poised to dramatically strengthen regional connectivity and cater to Africa’s rapidly increasing demand for robust digital services and internet infrastructure.

Expanding Africa’s Digital Backbone

The existing DARE1 cable, a critical piece of internet infrastructure, already provides high-capacity, low-latency, and resilient connectivity across Djibouti, Somalia, and Kenya. With this upcoming extension, Djibouti Telecom aims to bolster route diversity and open up crucial access to new markets. The proposed new segments will reach vital economic hubs in Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, and ultimately, South Africa, creating a more interconnected East and Southern African network. All new extensions are designed to interconnect seamlessly at the Mombasa (Nyali) trunk station in Kenya. From Mombasa, the planned route will stretch between an estimated 3,200 to 3,500 kilometers to Durban, South Africa. This substantial addition will establish a critical link, offering an essential alternative path for international data traffic for telecommunication carriers and various enterprises seeking enhanced connectivity options across the region. This move positions Djibouti Telecom at the forefront of African telecom development, fostering improved digital access and fostering economic growth across diverse African nations.

This monumental expansion of the DARE1 subsea cable system by Djibouti Telecom marks a pivotal moment for African connectivity. By extending its reach to key Southern African nations, the initiative is not only addressing the continent’s booming digital services demand but also reinforcing the resilience and diversity of its internet infrastructure. This investment will undoubtedly empower businesses, individuals, and governments with superior digital access, propelling Africa further into the global digital economy.
