AGI and World Bank Launch Energy Smart Businesses Initiative in Ghana
The Association of Ghana Industries–Energy Service Centre (AGI-ESC), in collaboration with the World Bank, has introduced the Energy Smart Businesses initiative, a pilot program designed to empower small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana. The project aims to reduce energy consumption, lower operating costs, and promote sustainable business practices within the sector.
# Empowering SMEs Through Energy Efficiency
This six-month pilot program will provide support to 35 carefully selected SMEs operating within the agribusiness, garments and textiles, and hospitality industries. The support package includes complimentary on-site energy audits to identify areas for improvement. Businesses will also receive customized recommendations tailored to their specific needs, staff training programs to implement energy-efficient practices, and access to a national energy efficiency peer-learning network, facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration. According to Baerbel Freyer, Chief Technical Officer of AGI-ESC, SMEs are critical to Ghana’s economic growth, but high energy costs often hinder their potential. This initiative, fully funded by the World Bank, seeks to equip these businesses with the resources and expertise needed to operate more efficiently, become more competitive, and serve as examples for other SMEs to follow, fostering a culture of sustainability across the nation.
In conclusion, the Energy Smart Businesses initiative represents a significant step towards promoting sustainable economic growth in Ghana by empowering SMEs to reduce energy consumption and improve their overall competitiveness. The collaborative effort between AGI-ESC and the World Bank has the potential to create a ripple effect, inspiring other businesses to adopt energy-efficient practices and contribute to a more sustainable future for the country.
