BFA Global and ClimateWorks Inject $1.1M into Nigerian Climate Tech Startups to Combat Extreme Heat

A significant collaborative effort involving BFA Global, FSD Africa, the ClimateWorks Foundation, and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) Nigeria is channelling $1.1 million into 12 innovative startups. This strategic investment aims to foster the development of crucial solutions designed to safeguard communities from the increasing threat of chronic heat waves. Under the banner of the TECA Heat Action Wave (THAW) initiative, these organisations are directly confronting Nigeria’s escalating extreme heat crisis, a phenomenon now ten times more severe due to human-caused global warming.

Tackling Nigeria’s Overlooked Climate Emergency with African Innovation

Nigeria is at the forefront of this climate challenge, with major urban centres like Lagos, Kano, and Abuja frequently recording heat indices exceeding 50°C during peak months. This severe heat is not merely an inconvenience but a grave threat, as highlighted by Juliet Munro, Early-Stage Finance Director at FSD Africa. Munro stated, “Extreme heat represents perhaps the most overlooked consequence of climate change affecting Africa today. It’s not only a public health emergency, but a threat to livelihoods, productivity, and long-term economic resilience.” She further emphasized the initiative’s commitment: “Through this initiative, we’re making a strategic investment in African-led innovation, supporting scalable, context-specific solutions that deliver real impact where it’s needed most.” The THAW program is specifically structured to back these 12 early-stage climate tech companies, empowering them to create and scale solutions tailored to the unique challenges faced by Nigerian communities.

This crucial investment underscores a proactive stance against one of Africa’s most pressing, yet often underestimated, climate impacts. By empowering local entrepreneurs and leveraging African-led innovation, the THAW initiative by BFA Global, ClimateWorks, FSD Africa, and FCDO Nigeria is laying the groundwork for resilient communities and sustainable economic development in the face of a rapidly changing climate. It represents a vital commitment to protecting lives, livelihoods, and the future of Nigeria amidst the escalating global warming crisis.
