This significant financial success stems from a strategic pivot into SIM card manufacturing, particularly after a 2022 ban on SIM card imports in Nigeria. This strategic move has positioned CardCentre as a prominent player in Nigeria’s domestic telecom manufacturing sector.
Seizing the Opportunity: A Strategic Pivot into SIM Card Production
For over two decades, CardCentre’s primary focus was supplying payment cards to financial institutions throughout Nigeria. However, recognizing a burgeoning opportunity in the telecom sector, the company strategically shifted its focus to SIM card production in 2021. This was particularly prescient given the subsequent import ban. The company received its first order from MTN Nigeria in December 2021. Production commenced in August 2022. CCNL’s operational model involves assembling SIM cards within Lagos. The Integrated Circuit Cards (ICCs), commonly known as SIM chips, are imported from their technical partner, Beijing Huahong IC Design Co., Ltd. (BHDC), a leading Chinese semiconductor firm. CardCentre handles the card body creation and integration processes locally.
