Glovo Riders in Morocco Launch 48-Hour Strike Over Pay and Conditions

Glovo delivery riders in Morocco, represented by the Moroccan Labour Union (UMT), have initiated a 48-hour strike today, protesting against their current pay and deteriorating working conditions. This action highlights the growing tensions within the gig economy across Africa, particularly concerning the rights and welfare of delivery workers. The strike underscores the need for fair labor practices and better treatment of couriers who are essential to the functioning of on-demand services.

Key Demands and Concerns of the Striking Glovo Riders

The striking Glovo couriers are demanding significant improvements to their current situation. They are primarily calling for increased pay, specifically advocating for a rise in the base rate per delivery. Currently, riders receive a meager 6 Moroccan dirhams (approximately €0.55) per delivery, an amount they argue is insufficient to cover their expenses. These include fuel, data charges, vehicle maintenance, and insurance costs. The UMT’s demands also include a doubling of night rates to compensate for the increased risks associated with evening deliveries. Additional requests include double pay and compensation for national and religious holidays, along with full payment for cancelled orders. Furthermore, the union is pushing for an end to the grouped orders system, which they believe adds to their workload without adequate compensation, and demands that the company implement algorithms that respect traffic laws, improving the safety of the couriers.

The strike serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by gig workers in Africa and the need for both companies and governments to address the issues of fair pay, working conditions, and worker protection.
