Djibouti Telecom Extends DARE1 Subsea Cable to South Africa, Strengthening African Connectivity

Djibouti Telecom is set to significantly enhance Africa’s digital landscape with the ambitious extension of its Djibouti Africa Regional Express 1 (DARE1) subsea cable. This crucial infrastructure upgrade will see the DARE1 cable stretch from Mombasa, Kenya, all the way to Mtunzini, South Africa, with service targeted to commence by 2028. This strategic move solidifies Djibouti’s commitment to evolving from a key Red Sea gateway into a truly pan-African interconnection hub, bolstering regional digital transformation and future-proofing connectivity across the continent.

Boosting Africa’s Digital Backbone

The DARE1 cable extension will cover an approximate distance of 3,200 to 3,500 kilometers from Mombasa to Mtunzini. Along this vital route, the project includes strategic new landings in Tanzania, Mozambique, and Madagascar, significantly expanding reach and resilience. This substantial upgrade is designed to deliver a multitude of benefits for critical stakeholders across East and Southern Africa. It promises to inject much-needed additional capacity into the network, drastically lower latency for data transmission, and crucially, increase route diversity. These enhancements are tailored to meet the escalating demands of telecommunication carriers, large enterprises, and global cloud providers, often referred to as hyperscalers, who rely on robust and resilient digital infrastructure. This extension is a clear statement of intent by Djibouti Telecom, aligning perfectly with Djibouti’s long-term vision and substantial prior investments in subsea cable networks, aimed at establishing itself as a dominant continental interconnection point.

By extending the DARE1 cable down Africa’s east coast, Djibouti Telecom is making a pivotal contribution to the continent’s digital future. This project underscores the nation’s strategic ambition to be more than just a regional player, transforming into a comprehensive pan-African digital hub. The scheduled completion by 2028 will unlock immense potential, driving economic growth and fostering greater digital inclusion by providing enhanced, resilient, and high-speed connectivity essential for Africa’s accelerating digital economy.
