Connecting Humanity: A Trillion-Dollar Investment for Universal Internet Access by 2030
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Communications, Space & Technology Commission (CST), has unveiled a comprehensive plan: the “Connecting Humanity Action Blueprint.” This blueprint outlines a concrete roadmap to achieve universal and meaningful internet connectivity by the year 2030. The report estimates a staggering investment of $2.6 to $2.8 trillion USD (in current dollars) is required to bring the entire world online. This presents both a challenge and a massive opportunity, especially for developing nations like those in Africa, to leapfrog into the digital age.
Infrastructure and Beyond: Where the Money Goes
The lion’s share of this monumental investment, estimated at $1.5 to $1.7 trillion USD, will be channeled into building and expanding vital connectivity infrastructure. This includes the development of both fixed broadband and mobile networks to reach underserved communities. But the financial needs extend beyond simply laying cables and erecting cell towers. The plan also addresses often overlooked but critical areas such as strengthening human and institutional capacities, and developing digital skills training. This multifaceted approach is crucial, as simply providing internet access is insufficient; equipping individuals with the skills to effectively utilize the internet is equally important, particularly in the African context, where digital literacy levels vary significantly.
