Nigeria’s 5G Future: Navigating Commercial Rollout Amidst 40.1% 4G Penetration

With 4G penetration in Nigeria standing at 40.1%, the imminent commercial rollout of 5G presents a complex yet strategic advancement for the nation’s digital landscape. Despite a significant portion of the country still transitioning to 4G, major industry players are already laying the groundwork for the next generation of connectivity. Nigeria is slated to be one of the next African countries to receive 5G, a move spearheaded by telecom giant MTN following its successful network launches in Bloemfontein and Port Elizabeth, South Africa. This signals a clear intent to push forward with next-generation technology, even as existing networks continue to expand.

The Strategic Path to 5G Deployment

The expansion of 5G across the continent is underpinned by a crucial agreement between MTN and Ericsson. This partnership facilitates the deployment of commercial 5G services not only in Nigeria but also in 20 other African countries where MTN operates. A key technical step in this process has been MTN’s upgrade to Ericsson’s Evolved Packet Core (EPC). This upgrade enables the launch of 5G services using a non-standalone (NSA) architecture, which leverages existing 4G infrastructure, making the transition more seamless. However, the path to widespread 5G is challenging due to the significant financial investment required. The technology demands new transmission infrastructure, including thousands of new cell towers, small cells, and distributed antenna systems (DAS) that will be deployed on utility poles and other urban structures.

The rollout of 5G in Nigeria is therefore expected to be a gradual and strategic process. While the high infrastructure costs indicate that initial deployment will likely focus on dense urban and commercial areas, the technological foundation is actively being built. The partnership between MTN and Ericsson demonstrates a long-term vision for Africa’s connectivity, aiming to bring the continent to the forefront of the global digital economy, even as the 4G network matures.
