Paystack and FAAN Revolutionize Airport Payments with Tap-and-Pay Cards

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), in collaboration with Nigerian fintech innovator Paystack, is transforming airport access payments with the introduction of a new, contactless system. This initiative, launched on August 28, 2025, promises to streamline the payment process for drivers, making it faster, more secure, and fully cashless across FAAN-managed airports. This innovative approach is a major step towards modernizing infrastructure in the African tech landscape.

How the FAAN Prepaid NFC Card Works

The cornerstone of this new system is the FAAN Prepaid NFC Card. Drivers can now tap their card at dedicated Paystack payment terminals located at airport entry gates. The access fee, determined by the vehicle type, is displayed on the terminal. A simple tap of the card then initiates an instant, PIN-less transaction, opening the boom gate in seconds. The system is designed to handle high traffic volumes, which is especially critical during peak travel seasons. These cards are available for purchase at FAAN terminals in Lagos’ Murtala Muhammed International Airport and Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. Drivers can activate the card by visiting the designated FAAN cashless payment website or by scanning a QR code. A nationwide rollout to all FAAN-managed airports is planned to be completed by the end of 2025. The payment system itself is powered by Paystack, utilizing encryption technology to ensure secure transactions.

In conclusion, the partnership between FAAN and Paystack offers a tangible example of how technology is improving critical infrastructure in Nigeria. The tap-and-pay system using the FAAN Prepaid NFC Card signifies a move towards efficiency and modernization in airport operations. This also provides a framework for innovation in the broader African context, demonstrating the transformative potential of homegrown technology in tackling real-world challenges.
