Kaspersky Uncovers Escalating Cyber Threats in Sub-Saharan Africa

The digital landscape in Sub-Saharan Africa is experiencing a significant surge in cyber-attacks, as revealed by recent data from global cybersecurity leader, Kaspersky. The first half of 2025 alone saw an alarming volume of hostile digital activity targeting the region, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced cybersecurity measures. These insights highlight a critical period for digital security across the continent, affecting both individuals and burgeoning businesses alike.

Alarming Surge in Attack Vectors and Volume

According to Kaspersky’s comprehensive analysis, Sub-Saharan Africa was subjected to a staggering 42.4 million web attacks and 95.6 million on-device attacks during the initial six months of 2025. This onslaught represents a worrying escalation in cybercriminal activity. The data further indicates a more than double increase in spyware infections when compared to the same period in the previous year, demonstrating a concerning trend towards more sophisticated surveillance tools. Moreover, password stealer attacks soared by 64%, presenting a grave risk to personal and corporate data, while backdoor infections rose by 12%. These statistics paint a clear picture of a region under increasing siege from diverse and evolving cyber threats, from sophisticated malware to basic credential harvesting attempts. Such findings are particularly pertinent ahead of key technology gatherings like GITEX Nigeria, scheduled for September 3-4 in Lagos, where these critical security discussions will undoubtedly take center stage.

The escalating cyber threat landscape in Sub-Saharan Africa necessitates a proactive and informed response. Kaspersky, recognizing this urgency, is actively engaging with the regional tech community. At upcoming events like GITEX Nigeria, the company plans to share invaluable practical advice and conduct specialized workshops. These initiatives are designed to empower businesses and individuals across the continent, providing them with the essential knowledge and tools needed to bolster their digital defenses and navigate the complex, ever-changing world of cyber threats.
