Julie Ako on Building Albantsho to Connect Screenwriters and Producers

Julie Ako, the co-founder and CEO of the media-tech startup Albantsho, is a rising force in the African film industry. A year after graduating from the Multichoice Talent Factory as the winner of the Nihilent award, her impact continues to grow. Ako also boasts an Afriff award for her short film screenplay, “Bride Untangled,” which won in the best student category. These accolades, however, are part of a larger mission. For the past two years, Ako has been developing Albantsho, a specialized marketplace designed to forge connections between screenwriters and other key creatives within Nigeria’s bustling Nollywood ecosystem.

From Computer Science to Nollywood

In a recent interview, Julie Ako shed light on the unique background that fuels her innovative approach to solving industry challenges. Her journey from a technical field to creative leadership highlights her distinct vision for Albantsho. “Although I studied computer science at the University of Benin,” Ako stated, “When I left school I decided I wanted to go into screenwriting and filmmaking fully because it’s something I passionately had a flair for and I had always written screenplays even while I was an undergraduate, which made it easy for me to transition into filmmaking.” This blend of technical expertise and a deep-seated passion for storytelling equipped her to build a platform that directly addresses the needs of writers and producers.

As a woman in tech, Julie Ako is focused on providing tangible solutions for Nollywood’s creative pipeline. Albantsho stands as a testament to her commitment, offering a structured platform where screenwriters can showcase their work and producers can discover fresh, compelling scripts. By bridging this critical gap, Ako is not just building a company; she is engineering a more efficient and collaborative future for the African film industry, ensuring that powerful stories find their way to the screen.
