Tunisia: Burnt Cats, Slaughtered Dogs. How Far Will the Cruelty to Animals Go?

The recent arrest of a woman in El Mellassine, Tunisia, on August 27th, who was filmed setting cats on fire, has once again sparked outrage. The suspect, known to have committed similar acts before, was taken into custody following instructions from the public prosecutor near the Tunis 2 court. Videos circulating online confirm that this was not an isolated incident.

A Recurring Pattern of Animal Abuse

This horrific event is symptomatic of a larger problem. Just days prior, the dog Rocky died from injuries sustained after being attacked with a sharp object in Sousse. The perpetrator received a three-month prison sentence, a penalty seen as largely symbolic by animal rights advocates. While this verdict represents a small step forward, it falls far short of the desires of those who demand genuine recognition of animal rights in Tunisia. Moreover, in several municipalities across the country, the practice of slaughtering stray dogs persists, highlighting a deeply rooted issue within Tunisian society and its approach to animal welfare. This raises serious questions about the enforcement of existing laws and the implementation of policies protecting vulnerable animals.
