Ghana’s Energy Future: Nuclear Power as a Catalyst for Industrialisation

Ghana’s energy landscape is at a pivotal juncture, with experts advocating for the integration of nuclear power to fuel the nation’s industrial ambitions. A stable and dependable energy supply is crucial for the growth of industries, and proponents of nuclear energy believe it offers a viable solution to Ghana’s energy needs.

Nuclear Energy: A Stable Solution for Ghanaian Industries

Leading voices in Ghana’s energy sector are championing nuclear power as a key element for industrialisation. Dr. Emmanuel Ampoma-Amaako, the Director of the Nuclear Installations Directorate at the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA), highlighted the reliability and sustainability of nuclear energy. He believes that nuclear power can bridge Ghana’s energy deficit, offering a dependable energy source that can sustain industries across the country. Dr. Ampoma-Amaako emphasized that nuclear power is a low-carbon option that can provide affordable electricity for industrial applications, contingent on strategic investment. These remarks were made during a workshop organised by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority for journalists in the Northern Region on Monday, August 25, 2025, which took place at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). The workshop served to educate and inform stakeholders about the potential of nuclear energy in Ghana’s energy mix.
