Ethio Telecom Eyes Significant Revenue Boost Fueled by Data, Telebirr and Network Expansion
Ethio Telecom, Ethiopia’s state-owned telecommunications giant, is anticipating a substantial financial upswing, projecting a remarkable 45.5% revenue growth by the end of June 2026. This optimistic outlook stems from a combination of factors, including increased data usage, a burgeoning customer base, and the continued adoption of its mobile money platform, Telebirr. This positive forecast signals significant development within the Ethiopian tech landscape and highlights the operator’s ambitious plans for the future.
Driving Growth: Subscribers, Telebirr, and Infrastructure
Spearheaded by CEO Frehiwot Tamiru, Ethio Telecom forecasts an impressive 6% increase in its subscriber base, reaching approximately 88 million users. Simultaneously, the company anticipates a notable 14% expansion in Telebirr users, demonstrating the growing importance of mobile money solutions in the Ethiopian market. The company attributes its expected success to an increase in data consumption, and the widespread use of its financial service. Moreover, Ethio Telecom is actively expanding its infrastructure. Last year saw the deployment of over 1,600 new mobile network sites, particularly in underserved regions.
Ethio Telecom’s privatization is still paused, and the operator is not listed on the country’s recently established stock exchange.
Future Outlook for Ethio Telecom
Ethio Telecom’s optimistic forecast underscores the company’s commitment to expansion and innovation within the African telecommunications sector. The focus on data, mobile money, and network infrastructure suggests a strategic approach to meeting the evolving needs of its customers and solidifying its position as a leading telecommunications provider in Ethiopia. While the company’s privatization remains on hold, the projected growth signals a promising trajectory for Ethio Telecom.
