Ghana Gears Up for Enhanced Vehicle Security with New Number Plates

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) in Ghana has taken a significant step towards modernizing vehicle regulation and bolstering security. Executive Director Julius Neequaye Kotey unveiled the prototype of the upcoming vehicle registration plate on August 25, 2025, signaling the introduction of the new system slated for 2026. This initiative promises enhanced identification and tracking capabilities for vehicles across the country, representing a leap forward in Ghana’s technological approach to transportation management.

Key Features of the New Number Plates

The new number plates are designed with cutting-edge technology and provide a significant overhaul of the current system. A crucial upgrade is the incorporation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. The sample plate showcased notable visual modifications. These include the display of the vehicle’s region of registration, offering an immediate geographical indicator. The plates will now feature a unique vehicle identity number combined with an area code “GR1” (e.g., 2301-GR1), effectively replacing the current practice of using the year of registration. Another feature is the inclusion of a regional slogan embossed beneath the registration number, adding a unique localized touch. This initiative aligns with the broader trend in African countries of adopting advanced technologies to improve public services and infrastructure.

The new number plate system marks a strategic move by the DVLA to ensure vehicle registration becomes simpler and more reliable.
