Tizi Ouzou Desalination Plant Reopens After Extensive Repairs
The Tassalast seawater desalination plant, located near Tigzirt, approximately 40 kilometers north of Tizi Ouzou, Algeria, has resumed operations after a nearly two-year hiatus. The plant, crucial for providing potable water, was brought back online on Saturday, August 23rd, following significant rehabilitation efforts. This news is particularly relevant in the African context, where water scarcity is a persistent challenge, and technological solutions like desalination are becoming increasingly important.
Key Repairs and Upgrades
The Algérienne des eaux (ADE) unit in Tizi Ouzou announced the plant’s reopening in a statement released on Monday, detailing the extensive repairs undertaken to restore full functionality. A critical repair involved replacing 400 meters of the seawater intake pipe, which feeds the plant. This pipe, situated 12 meters deep, had been damaged and swept away by waves on November 23rd, 2023. Moreover, technicians also replaced numerous electronic and electrical components within the plant’s main control system. The repairs were completed by ADE’s technical teams in Tizi Ouzou, with assistance from teams based at the Koud barrage production unit.
