INEC: Osun State Tops Online Voter Pre-Registration with Over 1.3 Million Nigerians Participating

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reported significant participation in its ongoing continuous voter card registration, with over 1.3 million Nigerians pre-registering online. This crucial exercise allows eligible citizens to register ahead of future elections, contributing to a more inclusive and representative democratic process. The initial week of online registration highlights the enthusiasm of Nigerians to participate in the electoral process, demonstrating the significance of digital platforms in streamlining such operations in Africa’s most populous nation.

Osun State Leads in Voter Registration Numbers

The online pre-registration, launched on Monday, August 18th, saw a substantial number of applicants nationwide within its first week. Osun State recorded the highest number of pre-registrations, with a staggering 393,269 applicants, which represents a significant 28.15% of the total. According to INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, the total number of online registrants for the period covering August 18th to August 24th reached 1,379,341. Further data breakdown revealed that 661,846 (47.96%) of the registrants were male and 717,856 (52.04%) were female. Importantly, the exercise attracted considerable youth participation, with 374,534 students (27.15%) and 27,089 individuals with disabilities (1.96%) also registering online.

Furthermore, the pre-registration saw a high turnout of young people aged between 18 and 34.

The high volume of online pre-registrations emphasizes the growing influence of digital tools in election management, reflecting the African continent’s adoption of technology for civic engagement. INEC’s efforts to leverage online platforms for voter registration mark a crucial step in modernizing Nigeria’s electoral processes.
