Kenya Joins EU’s $118M Broadband Boost for Africa

Kenya is poised to benefit significantly from a European Union (EU) initiative aimed at bolstering internet access across the African continent. This $118 million broadband project, involving 11 African nations, promises to enhance connectivity, reaching homes, schools, and communities with faster and more dependable internet services. This development is particularly crucial in a landscape where reliable internet access is a key driver of economic and social progress.

Africa Broadband Mapping: A Strategic Approach

The EU’s investment, channeled through the Africa Broadband Mapping Systems (Africa-BB-Maps) project, will allocate $16.5 million to Kenya specifically. The core objective is to map existing internet coverage, identifying areas with strong connectivity and pinpointing those lacking adequate access. This data is crucial for informed decision-making. Armed with this precise information, governments and private sector companies in Kenya can collaborate to strategically deploy infrastructure and services, ensuring broader and more equitable internet availability. The initiative highlights the EU’s commitment to supporting digital development across Africa.

In her address during the Nairobi launch, the European Union Ambassador to Kenya, Henriette Geiger, highlighted the significance of the project.

This project represents a significant step forward in bridging the digital divide. By accurately mapping internet access, the initiative fosters a data-driven approach to infrastructure development, ultimately leading to improved connectivity and opportunities for Kenyan citizens and other participating African nations.
