Ghana to Spearhead AI-Driven Agriculture in Africa with $100M Investment

Ghana is poised to revolutionize its agricultural sector and lead the way in technology adoption across Africa with a significant $100 million investment. This funding, secured from agri-tech giant Degas Limited, marks a pivotal moment, positioning Ghana to become the continent’s first AI-powered agricultural hub. The initiative was solidified following a meeting between Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama and Degas’ CEO, Doga Makiura, in Yokohama, Japan. This investment signals a commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology to modernize farming practices and enhance food security.

Transforming Agriculture with Artificial Intelligence

The four-year project aims to empower smallholder farmers, who are responsible for the majority of Ghana’s food production, with advanced tools and knowledge. The core of the initiative involves integrating AI and satellite imagery to provide farmers with vital insights. Degas Limited’s system will assist farmers in accessing improved seeds, essential tools, comprehensive training, and crucial financial credit. Previous deployments of this strategy have yielded impressive results, including a doubling of farmer incomes and a remarkable 95% loan repayment rate. This demonstrates the effectiveness of the approach in fostering sustainable agricultural growth and economic empowerment within the farming community.
