Ghana’s Ports Go 24/7: A Boost for Trade and the Digital Economy

In a significant move for Ghana’s economy, the Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has applauded the government for implementing a 24-hour economy at the nation’s ports. This initiative, a key promise during President John Dramani Mahama’s election campaign, is seen as a tangible step towards streamlining trade and boosting the country’s economic activity. The move reflects a growing trend in African nations to leverage technology and operational efficiency to drive economic growth through enhanced trade logistics.

Efficiency Gains Through Round-the-Clock Operations

Samson Asaki Awingobit, the Executive Secretary of the IEAG, highlighted the positive impact of the 24-hour port operations. He emphasized the increased flexibility and convenience it offers to industry players, allowing them more time to conduct business. This expanded operational window is facilitated by digital tools and processes, such as the option for importers to pay duties online weeks before their goods even arrive. Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) Commissioner-General Anthony Kwasi Sarpong confirmed that the Tema Port is now officially operating around the clock, allowing importers to clear their goods at any time, including during the late hours of the night. According to Mr. Awingobit, “Since the 24-hour system launched at the ports, our agents have embraced it because it is more flexible”. The move highlights the commitment of the Ghanaian government to modernize its trade infrastructure and promote ease of doing business, contributing to a more competitive and efficient trading environment within the continent.

In conclusion, the shift to 24/7 port operations in Ghana represents a significant positive development for the country’s importers and exporters. The embrace of digital payment systems and round-the-clock availability showcases the government’s commitment to driving economic growth and improving trade facilitation.
