NIMC Faces Monumental Task: Registering 3.3 Million Nigerians Monthly to Achieve 2026 NIN Target

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is facing an unprecedented challenge: registering a staggering 3.3 million Nigerians every month to reach the World Bank’s ambitious goal of 180 million National Identification Numbers (NINs) by December 2026. This represents the most significant test of NIMC’s capabilities in its 15-year history, underscoring the importance of efficient identity management in Nigeria.

Bridging the Registration Gap: Challenges and Strategies

Nigeria’s NIN system, akin to the U.S. Social Security Number, aims to provide a unified digital identity for every citizen. This digital ID will link vital demographic information with biometric data like fingerprints and facial images, expanding over time to include signatures and credit history. The goal is to ensure that every Nigerian, irrespective of their socio-economic standing or geographical location, can access essential services seamlessly using their NIN. As of June 30, 2025, 121 million Nigerians had registered for their NINs, leaving a considerable shortfall of 59 million registrations to be completed within just 18 months. NIMC’s highest monthly registration rate occurred in 2021, reaching an average of 2.19 million enrollments, resulting in a total of 26.3 million registrations for that year. To overcome this challenge, NIMC is relying on strategic initiatives. These include upgrading its biometric server infrastructure, expanding the number of enrollment centers, and collaborating with key partners like telecom companies and microfinance banks to facilitate mass registrations in 2025. These initiatives are crucial to ensure the digital identity system’s success and allow for better public and private sector service delivery to Nigerians.

In conclusion, NIMC’s ability to hit the 2026 target of 180 million NIN registrations hinges on overcoming logistical hurdles and ramping up registration capacity. The commission’s success will not only determine the future of identity management in Nigeria but also contribute to the development of its digital economy.
