Safaricom Aims for 8,000 Transactions Per Second on M-PESA Platform

Safaricom, the dominant telecommunications provider in Kenya, is poised to significantly enhance its M-PESA mobile money platform, solidifying its position as a cornerstone of the nation’s financial landscape. The company is targeting an impressive capacity of 8,000 transactions per second by the end of 2026, doubling the current capacity of 4,000 transactions per second. This ambitious upgrade will allow M-PESA to process an astounding 252 billion transactions annually, reflecting the rapidly evolving digital payment landscape and the increasing dependence on mobile money in East Africa’s largest economy.

Expanding M-PESA’s Capacity to Meet Growing Demand

Felix Rop, Safaricom’s head of IT, revealed that the expansion will be rolled out progressively, with a projected capacity of 6,000 transactions per second anticipated by April 2026. The ultimate goal is to reach the 8,000 transactions per second threshold by the end of the year, ensuring the platform can handle peak transaction volumes. This initiative underscores Safaricom’s proactive approach to addressing the soaring demand for digital payments and ensuring the resilience of its financial infrastructure. Safaricom has committed over KES40 billion to this significant infrastructural upgrade.

In conclusion, Safaricom’s investment in M-PESA’s capacity underlines its commitment to providing a robust and scalable mobile money service, vital for Kenya’s economic growth. The planned upgrade to handle 8,000 transactions per second is a significant step towards ensuring the platform remains at the forefront of the digital finance revolution in Africa, allowing it to support more financial interactions.
