Ghana’s Digital Skills Revolution: 500,000 Youth to be Trained by 2028

Ghana is making a significant push to equip its youth with crucial digital skills, targeting the training of half a million young people and women by 2028. This ambitious initiative, known as the “1 Million Coders Programme,” underscores the nation’s commitment to fostering a skilled workforce ready to compete in the global digital landscape. This was revealed by Prof. Marian Dorcas Quain, the Deputy Director-General of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR-Ghana), speaking on behalf of the Caretaker Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, at the GAIAfest 2025 opening ceremony in Accra on August 20, 2025.

Key Objectives and Impact of the Programme

The core focus of the 1 Million Coders Programme is to empower young Ghanaians with expertise in cutting-edge fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), FinTech, cybersecurity, and data analytics. This comprehensive training aims to create a substantial impact on the Ghanaian economy. The program anticipates generating 200,000 direct digital jobs and significantly boosting the nation’s digital exports by over US$2 billion annually. This transformative project is envisioned as a cornerstone of Ghana’s strategy to become a leading digital hub in West Africa, ultimately contributing to broader developmental objectives across the African continent.

Ghana’s bold investment in digital skills training signals its commitment to economic growth and technological advancement, preparing its youth for the jobs of tomorrow and positioning the nation as a key player in Africa’s digital future. This strategic initiative holds the potential to reshape Ghana’s economic landscape and create a brighter future for its citizens.
