President Tinubu Scraps 5% Telecom Tax, Offering Relief to Nigerian Mobile Users

President Bola Tinubu has officially abolished the proposed 5% excise duty on telecommunications services in Nigeria, a decision poised to bring financial respite to over 172 million mobile subscribers. The removed tax previously applied to both voice calls and data services.

Impact on Consumers and Digital Access

The now-defunct tax had been a source of contention, sparking concern among industry stakeholders and consumer rights advocates alike. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) reports this reversal aligns with President Tinubu’s broader agenda to improve digital access and affordability across the nation. The NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Aminu Maida, stated that President Tinubu ordered the tax’s total elimination.

This move signals a commitment to easing the financial burden on Nigerian mobile users and promoting greater accessibility to essential communication services, which are increasingly vital for economic activity and social inclusion.
